Postal stickers, particularly the free United States Postal Service (USPS) "Label 228," are a cornerstone of modern graffiti culture, functioning as a free, accessible, and easily "slappable" medium for artists. Originating in the 1980s, this practice allows artists to create complex art beforehand and apply it quickly on city surfaces, such as street signs, lampposts, and mailboxes.
The USPS Priority Mail label is the most popular, coveted for its strong adhesive, blank space, and "free" nature, often prompting artists to "go postal".
Stickers are quieter, leaving no noise or smell, and allow for meticulous, complex designs to be pre-made.
The action of applying stickers is often called "slapping." These, alongside "Hello My Name Is" stickers, are frequently traded within the community, fostering a global exchange of styles.
Prominent in 1990s and contemporary graffiti, these stickers act as a form of "guerrilla advertising" and an easy way to get "up" (gaining notoriety).
Although the USPS does not expressly prohibit using their labels for art, the unauthorized placement of these stickers on public or private property is still considered illegal vandalism.
